When Oprah joked about divorce with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

After starring together in movies like Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Umrao Jaan and Dhoom, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai tied the knot in a lavish, big fat Indian wedding.

The two took the wedding vows in 2007 and have been growing strong for over 14 years now. Despite being one of the most talked-about couples in Bollywood, Aishwarya and Abhishek keep their lives private and intimate.

You wouldn’t believe this, but it was two years after their marriage that Aishwarya and Abhishek shared space on interview. It was with Oprah Winfrey in 2009 the two sat together for an interview on National Television.

Speaking of which, during the interaction, Oprah asked the couple about their elaborate wedding. Abhishek explained that the Indian wedding festivities go on for over a week or 10 days and then you take the wedding vows by circling around the holy fire on the final day.

After hearing about the ceremonial fire and the seven rounds (saat phere), Oprah joked “Wow, seven rounds, it’s hard to get divorced after that.” To this, the Guru actress quickly responded with “we don’t even entertain that thought” and chuckled alongside the interviewee and Abhishek.

During the interview, Oprah also asked Abhishek and Aishwarya about living with the former’s parents. The couple replied that living under the same roof as one’s parents, unlike the West, comes naturally to Indians who have been practising it for a long time now.

Amitabh Bachchan stayed with his parents until they passed away and now Abhishek lives with the veteran actor.

Abhishek had shared a sweet rule that his mother, actress-politician Jaya Bachchan has for the family. If all of them are in town, they all must have at least one meal together.
