BCCI to demote Jasprit Bumrah in Test captaincy race

Jasprit Bumrah will not be given vice-captaincy.

Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is but the veteran will continue to lead India in one-day internationals and Test cricket. Suryakumar Yadav has replaced Rohit in the shortest format and he will be assisted by Shubman Gill, who is the new vice-captain in white-ball formats. Gill is being tipped as a future leader, considering his promotion. According to new reports, the selectors are thinking of appointing him as Rohit’s deputy in Test format as well.

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s vice-captain in the previous two Test series against South Africa and England. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were also in the race but the decision makers are likely to remove the speedster from the post.

According to RevSportz, sources in the BCCI have confirmed that Gill will replace Bumrah as the new vice-captain of the Indian team for the two-match series at home against Bangladesh. The opening Test will be played on September 19 in Chennai, while the second contest will be held on September 27 in Nagpur.

Gill will likely to serve as Rohit’s deputy in the home Test series against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar series Down Under. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, said that the management wanted an all-format player as a vice-captain and Gill fits the bill perfectly.

“Shubman Gill is a three-format player, and he has shown quality in the recent past. And we got positive feedback from the dressing room,” said Agarkar.
