Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan were married for 16 years before deciding to part ways. Despite their separation, Kiran and Aamir maintain a strong bond. In a recent interview, the Laapataa Ladies director discussed her separation from Aamir and revealed that the primary reason for their divorce was her desire for personal space and independence.

“I suppose I was very keen to having my space to myself and feeling independent again,” Kiran shared with journalist Faye D’Souza.It was noted that Kiran and Aamir still share a close relationship. They voted together earlier this year and even live in the same building. When asked if people questioned their decision to divorce despite their close bond, Kiran admitted that her parents had asked her this.

Explaining her decision, Kiran said, “We have a strong equation as co-parents, as family really, to survive the divorce. I’d be able to have individual time to myself with the comfort of knowing that Azad’s dad is also my friend, is also my family. It took me a while to get there mentally, emotionally. Even for Aamir to get there. We needed to be secure in the fact that we’re not going anywhere. We’re there for each other for the long term. It’s just that we don’t have to be married for that.”

In the same interview, Kiran also mentioned that relationships sometimes need to be redefined as people grow and change. “We grow and need different things. This change has made me happy,” she said.
Before meeting Aamir, Kiran was single for a long time and enjoyed her independence. Although she felt lonely at times back then, she doesn’t feel lonely now because of her son, Azad. She also feels very supported by her family, Aamir’s family and her friends.

Aamir and Kiran announced their separation in 2022. Despite the divorce, they continue to support each other. Kiran has attended personal occasions with Aamir, including his daughter Ira Khan’s wedding. Aamir, in turn, actively promoted Kiran’s directorial comeback, Laapataa Ladies, earlier this year.
