Seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have agreed to to play in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the BCCI senior selection committee is expected to meet on Thursday evening, as board secretary Jay Shah has traveled to Sri Lanka to attend the ICC’s annual conference.
Suryakuamr Yadav will be India’s T20I captain
The Ajit Agarkar-led team is likely to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as Team India’s new T20I skipper, while Rohit Sharma will continue to captain in the ODI leg.
As per sources, the selectors were considering Suryakumar Yadav to captain the T20I team, as they were unsure about appointing Hardik Pandya given his past fitness issues. Notably, Pandya served as India‘s vice-captain during their victorious T20 World Cup campaign.
The selection committee has reportedly informed the BCCI that they are open to replacing Suryakumar as captain in the future, if his performance fails to meet expectations. Meanwhile, the BCCI is considering the star batter to lead the Indian team at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Despite Pandya’s status as the apparent frontrunner, BCCI officials and selectors reportedly met with him to outline their plans for the next two years and explain why they ultimately preferred Suryakumar for the captaincy role.
The senior players have accepted Gautam Gambhir’s request to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series.
Hardik Pandya will play only the T20I matches. The senior selection committee has decided to rest star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming games. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant will be in the Indian squad for both series’.V
