Delhi Capitals parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven seasons. This has led to speculation that the franchise may appoint former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the new head coach. However, sources indicate that Ganguly’s appointment is unlikely. Just a day before Ponting’s sacking was announced, Ganguly expressed his desire to take on a head coach role for the first time in his career.

Ganguly currently serves as DC's Director of Cricket and oversees their sister franchises

“What about me? Let me give it a shot? I wanted to bring in England’s new star, Jamie Smith, to play for the Pretoria Capitals in the DC’s SA20 league. He was even ready to come, but England will be busy with their tour of India at that time, so we’ll need to look to sign for some other players,” Ganguly said in his interview with Bengali Daily Aajkaal.

According to News18, Delhi Capitals is hesitant to appoint Sourav Ganguly as both their Director of Cricket and head coach. The former BCCI president currently serves as DC’s Director of Cricket and oversees their sister franchises, including the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 league and the Pretoria Capitals in the South African T20 league.

“Ganguly is already handling multiple duties for the franchise as the Director of Cricket,” a source told News18.

“The team requires a practical coach who closely follows the circuit and maintains an aggressive approach similar to Gautam Gambhir. Given his comprehensive oversight of both international and domestic players, it’s no surprise that Gambhir has found great success as a mentor,” the source added.

DC are hesitant to appoint Ganguly as their head coach, as they prioritize stability, particularly ahead of the upcoming mega auctions.

“The management is seeking a long-term solution for the head coach position, rather than a temporary fix. This is a critical season, coming right after the mega auction, as the team enters a new competitive cycle,” he continued.

The reported added that DC are in discussions with two former World Cup-winning cricketers to join the team as head coach. The final decision will be made after the Major League Cricket season concludes.
