“Constantine 2: Producer Provides Update on Keanu Reeves Sequel”

“I hope it does, because its’ a great character,” di Bonaventura said to ComicBook.com while promoting Madame Web. “Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie.

Constantine 2 producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says he hopes the Keanu Reeves-led DC sequel moves forward very soon.

It’s such an alternative kind of character. It’s what really attracted me to Madame Web, was the singularity of the character, that idea that she is going to become blind and that she is going to become this other thing was really attractive.”

Based on the Hellblazer graphic novels, 2005’s Constantine starred Reeves as a chain-smoking exorcist with the ability to see half-angels and half-demons on Earth.

At the time of its release, Constantine was met with mixed reviews and earned $230 million worldwide. Reeves and director Francis Lawrence have expressed interest in a sequel as the original movie gained a cult following years after its release.

Is Constantine 2 still happening?

Initially, it was rumored that Constantine 2 was canceled due to the WGA strike as well as new DC Universe plans laid out by DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Lawrence, however, set the record straight while promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, stating that the sequel was still in active development at Warner Bros.

“Me, Keanu [Reeves], Akiva [Goldsman] have tried over the years to wrangle some control of the character again, because it had been handed over. I think NBC did a TV show, and then J.J. [Abrams] was going to try and do something. And then the regime at DC changed, and they’ve got their plans,” Lawrence said.

“But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit.

So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.”

Original Constantine producer Akiva Goldsman returns as screenwriter for the sequel which will likely fall under the DC Elseworlds banner alongside The Batman Part II and Joker: Folie à Deux. Constantine 2 does not have a release date.
