Warner Bros. PicturesSUMMARY
Constantine star Tilda Swinton has offered her insight into the development of a sequel.
At the same time, Swinton has revealed an intriguing rumor surrounding Keanu Reeves’ role in the world of Constantine .
Constantine 2 has now been in the works for some time, with many questioning whether it will happen amid James Gunn’s DCU.
Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton has offered what insight she can into the development of the long-awaited comic book movie sequel, Constantine 2.
Speaking with Inverse about the potential project, Swinton said she sadly does not know much, but has heard that “it’s happening.” Not only that, she has also heard an interesting rumor surrounding Constantine star Keanu Reeves…
“I’m sorry to have to tell you that I know nothing about this sequel except that I’ve heard it’s happening. Unless they’re very late in calling me, I don’t think Gabriel will be flapping his/her wings.
I did hear a rumor, I don’t know if you heard it, that Keanu was going to play Gabriel. Which would be beautiful.”
Now, this is one rumor that we have not heard about before, suggesting that it could be something circulating among Swinton and her friends in Hollywood.
Which could add some weight to the idea that Reeves will somehow play Gabriel in Constantine 2.
What this means exactly is open to speculation. This could mean that Reeves will play both John Constantine and Gabriel in the sequel, or it could mean that Constantine, after dying and ascending to Heaven (briefly) at the end of the first movie, now possesses some of the almighty powers of Gabriel
It could also mean that, instead of a sequel to Constantine, the character will instead undergo a reboot under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, with Reeves starring as Gabriel while another actor plays the title role.
What do you think? Is this the first hint at the plot of Constantine 2, or does it mean a new role for Reeves in the DCU? Your guess is as good as ours.
Will We Ever See Constantine 2?
Released back in 2005, and based on the DC comic Hellblazer, the first Constantine stars Keanu Reeves as an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift.
He can see the spirits of good and evil that live among us. But it’s a responsibility that he cannot stand and, as a teenager, he attempts to take his own life.
Saved from death, Constantine must now atone for his actions by acting as a guardian in the middle ground between Paradise and Hell and becoming a detective of the occult and the paranormal.
Constantine 2 director Francis Lawrence wants the film to have an R-rating, which couldn’t be better for the franchise.
While it was met with mixed reviews, the movie and Keanu Reeves have since found a passionate following, with cries for a sequel having gotten louder every year.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently offered an update on the development of Constantine 2, saying that he hopes to see the sequel happen as it’s such a “great character.”
“I hope it does, because its’ a great character. Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie. It’s such an alternative kind of character.
It’s what really attracted me to Madame Web, was the singularity of the character, that idea that she is going to become blind and that she is going to become this other thing was really attractive.”
Tilda Swinton, meanwhile, recently starred in David Fincher’s The Killer, and is due to star in the upcoming apocalyptic musical The End alongside George MacKay, Moses Ingram, and Michael Shannon.
