Sri Lanka beat Team India by 32 runs in the second ODI on Sunday (August 4) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. They took a lead of 1-0 in the three-match series, as the first ODI ended in a tie last Friday. The visiting team suffered a batting collapse in the second straight ODI on the tour, which brought their downfall.

After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka notched up 240/9 in 50 overs on a turning track. Kamindu Mendis (40), Avishka Fernando (40), Dunith Wellala (39), and Kusal Mendis (30) chipped in with mini contributions to help their side reach a decent total. Washington Sundar (3/30) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/33) were the star performers for India with the ball.

In reply, Rohit Sharma (64) hit a 29-ball half-century and set up a great platform for the chase in the powerplay for his side. He put on a 97-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill (34). However, India’s batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards after the departure of both openers. Jeffrey Vandersay (6/33) and Charith Asalanka (3/20) spun a web around the Indian batters, bundling them out for 208 in 42.2 overs.

“I was trying to hit the good areas and did the basics right”- Sri Lanka spinner Jeffrey Vandersay after his six-wicket haul vs India in 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay received the Player of the Match award for his magnificent spell in the second innings. At the post-match presentation, he reflected on his bowling performance, saying:

“There was some pressure coming into the line-up, I had to do something special, it’s easy to take credit after this spell but the credit goes to the batter, such a tough wicket to bat on, put on 240 runs and that helped bowl the way I did. Hasaranga is the number one spinner, no doubt about it, I got to understand the atmosphere, team balance and everything.”

He continued:

“I had to keep motivating and keep pushing myself hard and that’s what is required to play for the nation, I had to step up.There was assistance off the wicket, I was trying to hit the good areas and did the basics right. This is the game after sometime for me, once I got the first wicket, that built up some confidence and then kept on hitting the good areas.”

The two teams will square off in the final ODI of the series on Wednesday (August 7) at the same venue.
