Team India scored a mammoth total of 213/7 in the first innings of the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Saturday, July 27. Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele hosted the clash.

It is the opening contest of the three-match T20I series between the two nations. It is the dawn of a new era for India as they are without their stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The duo retired from the T20I format last month after winning the World Cup.

Newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav began their tenure with this series. It was a good start for Team India under the new regime as the batting unit fired after the Sri Lankan captain opted to bowl first on Saturday.

After being asked to bat first, India got off to a blazing start as both openers played impactful cameos at the top. Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a four on the very first ball of the match and continued in the same vein, racing to 40 (21). His partner, Shubman Gill, played second fiddle in the beginning but picked up pace during the later half of the powerplay. After a brilliant contribution of 34 (16), Gill perished in the sixth over, trying to hit a big shot.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also departed immediately on the next ball, leaving his side at 74/2 in 6.1 overs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav did not let the quick wickets derail his side’s momentum, as he played aggressively from the onset. Rishabh Pant struggled to get going at the other end, but Surya’s onslaught ensured the scoring rate did not dip.

Suryakumar Yadav (58) smashed a 22-ball half-century before departing in the 14th over. After a sedate start, Rishabh Pant (49) hit a few lusty blows in the death overs in the company of middle-order batters to take the visiting team to 213.
