The 81-year-old who beat Shah Rukh, Salman

For the last three decades, the three Khans – Shah Rukh, Salman, and Akshay – along with Akshay Kumar, have been ruling the Bollywood box office. These four actors have earned the most money at the box office and have given most of the biggest films in this era. So, at this point, to beat them at the box office, and that too at the age of 81, is no mean feat. But one Bollywood superstar has managed just that.

Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is breaking box office records currently. The dystopian sci-fi epic, billed as India’s most expensive film ever, is said to have crossed the Rs 1000-crore mark in worldwide box office collections. And while it stars Prabhas in the lead role, many viewers and critics have remarked that the real shining light and saving grace of the blockbuster is Amitabh Bachchan. The 81-year-old is one of the co-leads in the film and has stunned fans by doing action at his age. With this, he has also become the oldest actor ever to deliver a Rs 1000-crore film as the lead. In comparison, Shah Rukh’s last film – Dunki – managed Rs 470 crore at the box office, while Salman earned just lower with Tiger 3. Akshay Kumar’s most recent release Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was a box office bomb with lifetime earnings of under Rs 100 crore. Even Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal (Rs 917 crore) is now behind Kalki in global earnings.

How Amitabh Bachchan beat other ‘senior’ actors

Apart from Amitabh, there have been a few actors over 60 who have delivered blockbusters in lead roles in the recent past. The biggest of them all is Rajinikanth, who starred in Jailer last year, which earned over Rs 600 crore. Kamal Haasan’s Vikram grossed over Rs 400 crore worldwide, while both the Malayalam superstars – Mohanlal and Mammootty – have given Rs 100-crore hits in the last two years. Amitabh Bachchan is still one of the biggest entertainment brands in India and as per reports, earns Rs 350 crore for hosting a single season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, one of the biggest paydays in India entertainment scene.
